Why Fall is a Fabulous Time to Plant Trees, Shrubs and Perennials

Why is fall the optimal time? The main reason is cooler temperatures, which are gentler on developing roots. Often times the stress from hot weather can weaken plantings and it may look pretty sad until it can put down new roots and regain its vigor. By planting in the fall, you don't have to worry so much about heat causing a setback for your plants. Also, many Trees, Shrubs and Perennials start to go dormant in the fall, and if they don't have to expend energy on making leaves, they'll put energy into creating a strong root system. The ground tends to stay warm even as the air is cooling off, another encouragement for root growth. A strong root system will ensure a stronger plant come spring.
