If you are planning on enjoying a cut tree instead of an artificial tree here are some tips to keeping your tree fresh and safe. The tree should have a fresh cut across the bottom, about 1 inch above the old base. This removes any clogged wood that may not readily absorb water.
Think of a Christmas tree as a large bouquet of flowers. A cut mum lasts longer than a cut rose in a flower arrangement. Freshness counts, water is important, cool temperatures and some humidity in the house are better than hot and dry. Your live tree will absorb the most water in the first week, then it will slow down. Do not let your tree dry out, or you wind up back in your original situation, having to re-cut the base. Hard to do when it’s already full of ornaments, so it should be checked frequently and re-watered as necessary.

You can add a tree preservative to the water, we recommend Prolong. We have heard so many different recipes and homemade concoctions over the years such as aspirin in the water. We have sold Christmas trees for years and have yet to hear one say "Sorry honey not tonight I have a headache!" The most important tip is to keep the tree well watered!

Your Christmas tree should be located in a safe place, preferably near a wall or corner where it is not likely to be knocked over. Keeping the tree away from heat sources such as hot air ducts, wood stoves, fireplaces, etc., this will help to preserve freshness and lessen fire danger. Similarly, light cords and connections used in decorating the tree should be in good working condition. Lights should always be turned off at bedtime or when leaving for an extended period of time.
